WHAT IS A BIOPSY?

A biopsy is a medical test involving the removal and microscopic examination of tissues for detection of the presence or absence of disease. The doctor makes a clinical decision of what and when to biopsy.

THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF BIOPSIES:

EXCISIONAL: Removal of the entire lesion visible with the naked eye.

INCISIONAL: Removal of a part/representative area of a lesion.

FINE NEEDLE BIOPSY: Removal of tissue with the use of a needle.

WHY ARE BIOPSIES NECESSARY?

Although to the naked eye a lesion might appear benign and innocuous, histologic confirmation is important. Unexpected findings are not uncommon. It is important to know that even benign lesions need to be monitored to ensure positive outcome. Without being malignant, some lesions can be destructive, especially in small confinements such as the oral cavity.

WHY SHOULD BIOPSIES OF THE MOUTH, HEAD AND NECK BE EVALUATED BY A BOARD CERTIFIED SPECIALIST?

WHY SHOULD BIOPSIES OF THE MOUTH, HEAD AND NECK BE EVALUATED BY A BOARD CERTIFIED SPECIALIST?
Just like neurosurgeons specialize in diseases of the brain and spinal cord and dermatologists with skin, diseases of the mouth, head and neck should be diagnosed and treated by board certified experts.
