WHAT IS ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY?

WHAT IS ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY?
ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL PATHOLOGY is a specialty of dentistry, which deals with the diagnosis of diseases of the mouth including soft tissue, jawbones and salivary glands. The practice of oral and maxillofacial pathology encompasses radiology, microscopy and also physiology of the maxillofacial apparatus. Certification in oral and maxillofacial pathology entails three years of training in an accredited program and successful approval of the corresponding board examination.
The mouth is a unique and vital part of the body, as is the brain, heart, liver, etc. Each region of the mouth such as the cheeks, tongue, gums, jawbones and salivary glands is different at the embryologic, functional and microscopic levels and gives rise to characteristic benign and malignant lesions. Tissues such as muscle, fat and vessels are found elsewhere in the body, therefore there is commonality between oral pathology and medical pathology.

Dr. Robison’s vast training and knowledge allow addressing oral pathology with the library of information of a surgical pathologist.
